The war was fought from 1775 to 1783 in small battles throughout the colonies. Various people from different nationalities and countries fought in the war for many different reasons. Some wanted freedom from British control; others wanted money and were paid soldiers, while others wanted freedom from slavery or encroachment of their land by the colonist. Whatever the reason, many lives were lost and many families broken apart since this was a civil war in many ways. A struggle between a group of people who could no longer get along and the tensions had exploded into conflict and the conflict into war.
The Colonial army led by George Washington finally defeated the British army. The colonies then became independent and in charge of themselves, which meant they no longer were under British control. The colonies then joined together and became a unified union know today as the United States of America.
